What is ROW Vegetation Management?
Right of Way (ROW) clearing is the process of clearing unwanted and overgrown shrubs, trees, bushes, and any other vegetation away from pipelines, railroads, and power lines. ROW vegetation management takes this process a step further by performing precautionary methods to keep vegetation from growing.
Types of Vegetation Management
There are multiple ways in which we can manage vegetation. By using a combination of herbicides and manual removal of vegetation growing on land and in water, it is possible to achieve a clear ROW. Three types of vegetation management that Lanracorp performs for customers include aquatic mowing and vegetation control, clearing vegetation on land, and the use of herbicides to prevent re-growth. Some of these methods restrict the growth of vegetation, while others are precautionary methods that help to maintain areas that have previously been cleared.
Aquatic Weed and Algae Control
Even though your ROW may cross a body of water or wetlands, you still don’t want excessive vegetation in these areas. Mechanical control actively removes aquatic weeds by pulling or using a floating mower like a MarshMaster. Chemical control is herbicides to reduce/eliminate growing trees or weeds.
Vegetation Survey with GIS
We use GIS to track work along the ROW, but we can also use this to perform a Vegetation Management Survey. We also perform a walking survey and gather data about tree overhangs, hazard trees, areas needing clearing and what degree of clearing, and so much more. During this trip, we can build out a full vegetation management program by site – this would utilize mechanical or the application of herbicides to provide a successful long-term plan that meets your budget.
Herbicide Treatment for Vegetation Management
Finding the proper herbicide treatment for vegetation can be tricky because not all vegetation reacts to the same treatments. Recently, herbicides have excelled in creating a great, reliable option for people looking to control vegetation on their property. Using the same herbicide year after year may not be as effective as using different types since vegetation seems to adapt and grow even when a specific herbicide is used.
