It’s one thing to create core values, it’s another thing to enforce them and live them. In order to ensure that your company’s core values are strong, you must live them on the job and outside of work.
Lead by Example:
We preach this and will never stop preaching the importance of leading by example. What is practiced by others becomes habit throughout the organization. Leaders must constantly walk and talk their core values on the job and outside of work. What is done routinely becomes a habit and a habit becomes just the way things are done.
Teach Core Values Early On:
Instill the company’s core values on day one. Don’t do this by handing them a pamphlet and sending them on their way. Dedicate time during training and orientation to sit down and discuss core values and what they mean not only as a company, but for personal growth. Hire, evaluate, and fire from these core values.
Constantly Reinforce Your Core Values:
You should be sending out a clear message about your company’s core values often. Reinforce the team’s core values in employee newsletters or other staff documents. Take the time to touch base on core values during team meetings and before breaking at the end of the day. Reinforcing core values often will keep them top of mind.
Recognize Those Who Live Out Core Values:
It has been proven that rewarded behavior is likely to recur. This isn’t new. When a person receives praise or reward for something that they do, they are more likely to continue doing it. Publicly praise those who are living out their core values. Implement a system that allows others to report those who are showing this on and off the job.
Address Problems Head On:
It’s never fun to confront an employee about their wrongdoings, but it’s necessary. If you catch wind of an employee that isn’t abiding by the company’s core values, address the problem head on. What is practiced by others becomes habit throughout the organization. Ensure that your employees are practicing core values vs. creating poor habits.
Maintain Consistent Messaging:
Make sure that your messaging is consistent across the board. Your values will lose credibility if they are built on an unsecure foundation. Don’t confuse your employees with values that contradict each other. Ensure that your core values have a clear goal and message.
